27 Sep A “Swachhata Abhiyan” by the students of UWSB Kolkata
A “Swachhata Abhiyan”, or “Swachh Sector V”, was carried out on the 25th of September, 2018 by the students of UWSB Kolkata in and around Sector 5, Salt Lake, Kolkata. The objective was to demonstrate and create awareness about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan. The spirit of the students was not one bit dampened by intermittent rains and overcast skies.
The students staged a street play and drew the attention of the passers-by and locals. More importantly, the food stalls along the streets, the biggest source of litter on the street, watched and paid attention to the play. It was interesting to see passers-by stop, watch and nod in approval as they saw young men and women clean the litter on the street. The Slogan for the Day was “Hum Ne Yeh Thana Hai, Bharat Swachh Banana Hai!’
The “Swachhata Abhiyaan” or “Swachh Sector 5 Campaign” has now become an annual event for Unitedworld School of Business, Kolkata. It has evolved from being a symbolic exercise in 2016 to a well-orchestrated event in 2018. The activity now does not only involve symbolic cleaning of the street in the vicinity but is also aimed at creating awareness among the general public.
Towards that end, the students have been organizing street plays and coining slogans. In the past, the litter in the vicinity was an eye-sore. Now the street corner food stalls have large bins to collect the used paper plates and cups. We Have Made A Difference!
